Overcomers by Grace
is a
ministry under the oversight of New City Fellowship of Nairobi which is
committed to exalting the Lord Jesus Christ and bringing tribal and racial
reconciliation in Nairobi through the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Due to the oppressive tenets of Hinduism and Islam, many disabled people
experience isolation and abuse from their families and the Hindu and Muslim
communities. As a Muslim,
Shafkat Khan
experienced these dynamics first-hand following a serious auto accident that
hospitalized him for over six years and paralyzed him below the waist. Following
his profession of faith in Christ, Shafkat was moved by the Holy Spirit to shine
the light of the gospel into the dark lives of others in his situation.
For the past eight
years, Shafkat and his wife Sabia, have gathered youths and adults from their
homes to share the love of Christ through fellowship, tutoring, basic physical
and occupational therapy, and proclaiming the Gospel of grace. The ministry also
includes outreach to the families of the participants. By demonstrating the
tangible results of patiently loving and teaching each participant, the ministry
reveals the abilities and dignity of each participant to their family.

Vision Statement
Overcomers by Grace exists to reach out
to physically challenged persons in the Nairobi community with the love of
Christ by meeting their physical, emotional and spiritual needs through the
presentation of the Gospel in word and deed.
Mission Statement

To establish a permanent center, called
Overcomers By Grace, that will facilitate professional therapeutic care and
provide educational and employment opportunities for neglected and abandoned
Asian and African children and adults in the Nairobi area while providing an
ongoing opportunity to share the Gospel with them and their families.
Immediate Needs
Overcomers by Grace currently meets
three times per week at Shafkat’s modest apartment. Participants are gathered
from their homes using a rented van. Two paid staffers assist in the tutoring
and basic therapy of the participants. The near-term vision is to increase the
quality of care provided to the participants and establish stable financial
support to enable the ministry leaders to focus on the growth of the ministry.
The plan includes a weekly three hour visit by a physical therapist and a speech
therapist. Two hours of the therapist’s time will be spent addressing the needs
of the participants, and one hour dedicated to training the staff. In doing so,
the staff will provide a higher level of sustained care and receive valuable job
training. In order to strengthen the ministry to the disabled community we hope
to address the following goals:
• Cover the costs
of a director’s salary and current building needs to continue the ministry in
its present form.
• Support weekly visits by professional Speech and Physical Therapists, who will
in turn provide practical training to paid staff assistants
• Cover transportation costs
• Provide teaching materials
